Andrew Beyer, likely the world's most famous handicapper, revolutionized handicapping with his development of the Beyer Speed Figure. The figure is calculated for every horse in every race in North America and is published (since 1992) in the Daily Racing Form Past Performances. The basic premise is to measure one race horse against another by how fast it runs with its speed figure calculated according to the surface over which it runs. If every horse ran over a standard surface at the same distance we could compare their speeds simply by looking at their finishing times. Beyer developed his speed figures to provide handicappers with an accurate comparison of horses who run over different surfaces (fast tracks, slow tracks, etc.) on different days and different distances. The Beyer Speed Figures have become renowned as an essential and reliable tool for easily picking out the best horses. (*As advertised on BloodHorse.com Stallion Register)
